Oh, and it's worked so well around the Green Zone. No attacks there - ever.Although Baghdad is rife with barriers around marketplaces and areas such as the heavily fortified Green Zone, this is the first in the city to be set up on sectarian lines.
The concrete wall, which will be up to 12ft high, "is one of the centrepieces of a new strategy by coalition and Iraqi forces to break the cycle of sectarian violence," US officials said.
The officials said the barrier would allow authorities to screen people entering and leaving Adamiya "while keeping death squads and militia groups out".
Some Sunnis living in Adamiya have welcomed the attempt to improve security but warned that it was another sign of the deep hostility between Sunnis and Shias.
Others were sceptical about the latest initiative to staunch the bloodshed in Baghdad, which reached new heights when a series of suicide bombings killed more than 200 people in a single day this week.
"I don't think this wall will solve the city's serious security problems," Ahmed Abdul-Sattar, a 35-year-old government worker, told the Associated Press. "It will only increase the separation between our people, which has been made so much worse by the war."

Didn't make much of a blip on the news services did it? I saw it here first, and only once or twice in the other sources. There are so many things wrong with this it boggles the mind.
More of the cowardly "out of sight, out of mind" which is the only thing our administration can do with any success. Throttle the press, disallow pictures of dead combatants, even those hygienically packed in coffins and gift-wrapped with the flag. They are too patriotic to even acknowledge the “ultimate sacrifice” as the suit-wrapped cowards like to call the unnecessary use of human beings as cannon fodder.
Then to add insult to injury, they are calling the walled Sunni area a ‘gated community’, to evoke pictures of callow sallow upwardly soccer moms in an exclusive neighborhood. ‘Ghetto’, despite the Jewish roots, is a more apt description. Our troops are killing tens of ‘insurgents’ for every one of ours are no doubt enforcing rigid curfews. Ghettos created and enforced by the sword. Not the legacy we should be repeating from WWII.
If following the lead of the ‘bad guys’ in nearly every previous war we’ve fought doesn’t bother you, try this. There are no examples I can think of where building a wall has worked to create peace, and all, including the Berlin Wall delayed peace and created more bloodshed. Did the Great Wall of China work, or was it the ancient equivalent of the Maginot Line? What is it with the neocons? No matter how many times they fail and make things worse then they have ever been, the jones about the success and triumph just around the corner.
